Researching Careers

After you have explored your skills, strengths and weaknesses, it is now time to begin researching careers and occupations. There are a lot of great online resources available and I will share some on this page to get you started.

Below are websites and resources that you can search to learn more about occupations, as well as the outlook and trends for growing fields.

Start exploring these sites by clicking on the below images and use the Using The Occupational Outlook Handbook worksheet (also at bottom of page) to gather information you find! Also, take a moment to complete the O*NET Interest Profiler Inventory to further explore careers.

O*NET OnLine is an application that was created for the general public to provide broad access to the O*NET database of occupational information. O*NET OnLine offers a variety of search options and occupational data,  including information on skills, abilities, knowledges, work activities, and interests associated with occupations.  It was developed for the U.S. Department of Labor by the National Center for O*NET Development.

The Occupational Outlook Handbook (OOH) provides information on what workers do; the work environment; education, training, and other qualifications; pay; the job outlook; information on state and area data; similar occupations; and sources of additional information, for 324 occupational profiles, covering about 4 out of 5 jobs in the economy.
My Next Move is an interactive tool for job seekers and students to learn more about their career options. My Next Move has tasks, skills, salary information, and more for over 900 different careers. Users can find careers through keyword search; by browsing industries that employ different types of workers; or through the O*NET Interest Profiler, a tool that offers personalized career suggestions based on a person's interests and level of work experience.
